Iola Old Car Show And Swap Meet: A Premier Classic Car Event in the Midwest

The Iola Old Car Show And Swap Meet is one of the largest and most celebrated car shows in the Midwest, attracting thousands of classic cars and automotive enthusiasts from across the country. With a rich history dating back to 1972, this event has grown into a premier destination for car lovers and collectors alike.

A Historic Beginning

The Iola Old Car Show And Swap Meet began humbly in 1972 when Chet Krause invited a few friends to gather near Lake Iola to discuss the Old Cars Weekly publication, which had started the year before. Around 20 cars participated in this first informal meeting, but the event quickly outgrew its original location due to its increasing popularity.

Growing to New Heights

In 1976, the event moved to its current location, surrounding the growing Krause Publications operation. This move helped solidify the Iola Old Car Show And Swap Meet as the premier swap meet in the Midwest. The event's success relied heavily on support from local organizations, which managed essential services like parking, food, and garbage. In 1984, the Iola Old Car Show was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) Charitable Non-Profit Corporation, allowing it to better serve the community.

Community Support and Charitable Impact

The transition to a 501(c)(3) organization in the mid-1980s was led by four community groups: the Iola Lions Club, Iola Fire Department, Iola Winter Sports Club, and Iola-Scandinavia Jaycees. As the event continued to grow, more organizations joined to help, including the Iola American Legion, Iola Conservation Club, Iola Hospital Auxiliary, Norseman Snowmobile Club, Ogdensburg Fire Department, Sons of Norway, Stevens Point Old Car Club, and the Waupaca VFW. Today, over 100 additional community organizations contribute to making the event a success. Volunteers from these organizations play vital roles during the event, and proceeds are distributed back to them. To date, Iola Old Car Show, Inc. has issued more than $9 million to volunteer organizations and community projects, demonstrating its significant positive impact on the local community.
