Wausau RC Sports Flyers: A Thriving Hub for RC Aircraft Enthusiasts
The
Wausau RC Sports Flyers is a premier club based in Wausau, Wisconsin, dedicated to the hobby of building and flying radio-controlled (RC) aircraft. With a rich history dating back to the 1940s, this club provides top-notch facilities and hosts exciting events for RC aircraft enthusiasts of all skill levels.
A Rich History and Strong Foundations
The hobby of flying RC aircraft has been a popular pastime in the Wausau area since the 1940s. In 1966, six passionate modelers, including Warren Pope, Dr. Bill Backer, and Dr. Thurl Burr, founded the Wausau R/C Sportsmen Club. As the club's membership grew, it became clear that affiliating with the Academy of Aeronautics (AMA) was essential for frequency control, insurance, and participation in competitive events.
In 1967, the
Wausau RC Sports Flyers were granted AMA Charter #671, which they still maintain today. AMA membership is required for all pilots to use the Sunnyvale R/C Park, ensuring a safe and organized flying environment.
A Diverse Range of RC Aircraft
The
Wausau RC Sports Flyers club is home to a wide variety of RC aircraft, including:
- Kit planes
- Helicopters
- Sailplanes
- Multi-engine creations
- Amphibious craft
In recent years, there has been a notable increase in ARFs (Almost Ready to Fly) aircraft in both glow fuel and electric models. The sizes of these models range from a few ounces to around 50 pounds, with wingspans from 1 foot to 12 feet.
Top-Notch Facilities at Sunnyvale Park
Located at Sunnyvale Park on South 72nd Ave, just south of Hwy 29, west of Wausau, the
